OSOP 08 Schools' Workshop Programme: Creative Bus Journeys

Children working with Lisa Berry

Children visiting work by Michael Shaw

On Tuesday 17 June children from Castle Primary school had a tour of the artworks and went on a 'creative bus journey' with community arts organisation Seahouses and students from Northampton University to visit children from Welford Primary School. On 19 June children from Weford made a jouney to the bus station and Castle Primary.

Jane Roberts of Seahouses said “All the children had such a fantastic time. Seeing the artwork in the Bus Station travelling on a double decker bus and meeting new friends. The children produced lovely work relating the to exhibition which everyone can now see in the Nexus shop in Greyfriars.

We hope this new relationship between the urban Castle Primary School and the rural Welford Primary School will offer more opportunities for joint outings and activities and that the children will gain clearer understanding of each other and develop friendship”.

Installation of Survivalist, Rich White - 4 June, day 2

The structure is really taking shape!

Naomi Haigh is a second year art student from the University of Northampton and is working with Rich all week. At the end of the second day she texted me to say, "I've enjoyed working with as this work very much insipres my creative process. I've found it's a very calm and relaxed atmosphere which allows open discussion about how it would be possible to develop the work further."

Call for submissions

OSOP commissions contemporary art in non-gallery spaces in and around Northampton. We welcome submissions by emerging artists in a range of media and practises.

In June, 2008 there will be up to five commissions for new artwork to be situated in, or near, Greyfriars Bus Station (following last year's successful project in this venue).

The Bus Station has become a site of controversy: locally, regionally and nationally, after it was nominated as the second worst eyesore in Britain on Channel 4. Nevertheless it also has its supporters, including passengers and architects.

More details can be found at:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/6221200.stm

As part of the commission selected artists must be available to install the work on site as well as attend at least two/three events where they will have the opportunity to discuss their work with the general public.

Commission: Up to five commissions of £1000 (plus £200 towards material costs) dependant on number of artists selected.
